What is an employer reference request?

An employer reference request, in this sense for you, is a request for you to ask your current employer to write a reference letter for you.

At this point, you will have interviewed for a new position and you are at the stage where you need your employer to say some pretty amazing things about you.

That’s all it is.

You can ask in person, by email, Slack, however you typically communicate with your boss, on a professional level at least.

Why do you need employer references?

A prospective employer typically requires an employer reference as part of the hiring process.

It serves as a way for your new employer to verify everything you have told them such as work history, job performance, and qualifications and gain insight into your professional background.

Employer references can also provide important information about your strengths and weaknesses, which can help your potential new employer make a more informed hiring decision.

What happens if my boss refuses to give me a reference?

If your boss refuses to give you a reference, it may be difficult for you to find a new job, as references are often a required part of the hiring process.

However, don’t panic, you can do a few things in this situation:

1. Try understanding their refusal: If your relationship with your boss is good and you have yet to learn why they would not want to provide you with a reference, then you may want to ask them why they are refusing.

2. Look for alternative references: You can find other people who can speak to your qualifications and skills, such as previous co-workers, supervisors, or colleagues.

3. Use your accomplishments to speak for yourself: If you don't have any other references, you can focus on highlighting your achievements in your resume, cover letter, and during interviews.

4. Consider leaving it out: If you need a reference from your current or previous employer, leave that section out of your application. Some hiring managers may not require a reference or may not follow up on the references provided.
